Meaning of Ayurveda

The word Ayurveda is a composition of two Sanskrit words: Ayur- meaning Age; Veda- meaning Knowledge or Science.
It is explained as a “Science of the Age” or the “Science of the Life” or the “Knowledge of Health.”

History / इतिहास

  • Ayurveda traces back to about 5,000 years ago in the Indus valley, where the Vedas, or oldest Ayurvedic scriptures, originated
  • Knowledge was passed down from one generation to the next
  • Legend has it that the knowledge within the Vedas was downloaded, so to speak to a number of sages in deep meditation.
  • This was experienced as an act of divine love to help us manage and maximise our lives on earth For centuries, this knowledge was passed down from one generation to the next in the form of memorised chants known as sutras.

There are Four Vedas

The oldest of which is the Rig Veda, which refers to three great beings governing the universe, in the form of Agni, Soma and Indra, which are personifications of the sun, moon and wind.
Known as the fourth veda, the Atharvaveda (meaning ‘no vibration’, or how to make the mind stable), contains the knowledge of Ayurveda
Two systems of medicine are described in the Atharvaveda
  1. Compilation of drugs used on an empirical, rational basis
  2. Type of magical spiritual medicine.

Another version of the origins of Ayurveda 

Three very important texts that all scholars of Ayurveda can’t manage without are
  • Charaka Samhita,
  • Sushruta Samhita, and
  • Ashtanga Hrdayam by Vagbhata
God of Ayurveda
Dhanvantari imparted to them the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid it of the suffering of disease.

It provide the guideline of food and art of Living. So Ignorance of art of living is the result of serious illness.

Goal of Ayurveda

To provide physical and mental health through cure the diseases.
 To provide that our century organ are work properly
 To maintain optimum level Ojas (Vitality), Tejas (Shine) and Prana (Energy) in our body
Without any obstacle persons can perform all the duty towards society and family
To provide happy life through physical mental emotional and spiritual peace
Purpose
Serve bhavantoo sukhinah, serve santoo niramayah
Serve bhadrani pashyantoo ma, kashchid dukkha bhag-bhavet
Translation
May all be happy, May all be free from the diseases
May all see good in everything, May none suffer from any grief
